ATHENIAN
LEAGUE.
Wimbledon Beat Kingston.
The return Athenian League match between Kingston and Wimbledon was played
on Wimbledon's ground on Wednesday evening, the home club winning by 3-1.
At Kingston the result was a draw, 2-2.
There was an excellent attendance, though the weather was not at all favourable,
and during the second half heavy rain made the ground very slippery. Wimbledon
played one of their best games, and their superiority was scarcely done
justice to by the score. Much of their footwork was very fine, and in
accuracy of passing they were notably the better side. Kingston's left
back not infrequently misjudged the flight of the ball, and when it passed
well over his head Wimbledon's speedy right wing were carrying on the
movement unchecked, save for such assistance that Davies could render,
and his appearance on the scene was, of course, the signal for the ball
to be transferred to the place he had just vacated.
The three goals that Wimbledon scored in the first half carry no reproach
to Kingston's goalkeeper. All were the result of terrific drives when
close in, the shots coming from Jones, Armitage and Wilson at about ten-minute
intervals. They sealed Kingston's fate.
With the near approach of half-time one of Crick's solos bore fruit. Though
impeded in his progress he maintained control of the ball until it was
safely past Bennett, and the applause was well earned. The stormy weather
and bad light precluded any interval, and during the greater part of the
second half squalls of hail and rain swept the ground. The goalkeepers
continued to give a brilliant display, though Winyard always had the lion's
share, and the period passed with their goals remaining intact.
