Victory Over Barnet.
Kingstonians made their holiday record a brilliant one by supplementing
the victories of Friday and Saturday by beating Barnet two to nil in another
Athenian League match at Barnet on Easter Monday afternoon. The team was
the same as in the previous matches, with the one exception that Ayliffe,
from the reserve eleven, partnered Vivyen-Davies at back.
On the whole the game was not one about which one could be enthusiastic.
After the stiff programme of the week-end, there was, not unnaturally,
a little staleness among the players, and the heavy ground was not to
the taste of the Kingstonians. Barnet undoubtedly had the greater share
of the exchanges, and that they failed to score was chiefly due to poor
shooting on many occasions and to the splendid goal-keeping of Winyard.
From the onset Barnet pressed, and they were the attackers throughout
the greater part of the first half, during which the Kingstonian goal
had a number of narrow escapes and Winyard effected several fine saves.
The home crowd frequently reminded the Kingstonians that the were not
playing Cheshunt, but, as events proved, the visitors demonstrated that,
when the opportunity occurred, they were more apt than Barnet in finding
the net.
About half-an-hour of the time had passed when Kingstonians opened the
scoring. Wright and Harry got away from midfield, and, when challenged
by the backs, Harry headed the ball past them, ran forward and scored
with a nice rising shot. A little later, Harry again beat the backs close
in and again looked like scoring, but this time the Barnet custodian threw
himself at the ball and made a brilliant save, although at the expense
of a corner.
At the other end, the Kingstonian goal was threatened frequently, particularly
from several corners, from one of which Coomb grazed the cross-bar with
a hard shot. At the interval Kingstonians had the credit of the only goal
scored- admittedly a rather flattering position for them, having regard
to the run of the play.
The visitors had a greater share of the play during the second half than
they did in the first, but both goals had some very narrow escapes. Once
Winyard, going out to clear, was deceived by the bounce of the ball, which
passed beyond him, and Davies kicked away in the nick of time as the home
forwards dashed in to score.
Then the Barnet goal had a lucky escape, Henson placing in the centre
well and Harry, from close in, hitting the cross-bar with a shot when
the goalkeeper was well beaten and Stentiford receiving the ball on the
rebound, also had the mortification of seeing his shot stopped by the
crossbar. Subsequently there was much exciting play in the Kingstonians'
half, and the backs, Wood and Yates, did good work in defence, whilst
Winyard coolly dealt with all the shots that came his way.
Harry ably led the visitors' front line in a number of runs, Crick and
Henson also contributing good efforts on the wings. Once Wright - who
otherwise did well - had practically an open goal in front of him, as
the result of play by Henson and Harry, but he shot wide. The game was
nearing the end, when a break-away by Crick gave Kingstonians their second
goal. Barnet were pressing, and Harry cleared from the goal area, sending
out to Crick, who took the ball the length of the field, beat the back,
and centred well. Stentiford shot and Green saved, but Crick followed
up and scored a good goal. Both goals were subjected to further attacks,
but time came with the score still:-
