NO LADY REFEREES. Important Decision of the Surrey County F.A. Mr. G. Brandon presided at a meeting of the Surrey County F.A. held at Kennington Oval on Wednesday, when there were also present Messrs. Carn, Bell, Northcott, Lorraine, Wilson and Thomas (vice-presidents), Monk (match secretary), Burgess (referee secretary), Crump (leagues secretary), W. J. Wilson (secretary and treasurer), Ayres, Carley, Dobb, Elliott, Harding, Lambert, Meadows, Peel, Rodgers and Captain Lowis. Mr. Burgess reported the receipt of an application from Mrs. Butler, of Ripley, for entry to the examination for official referees and asked for instructions. - Messrs. Peel, Carley and Thomas strongly denied a Press Report that this lady argued with and confused any one of them on the offside rule. - It was pointed out that there was no ruling as to the sex of applicants. It was unanimously agreed that the acceptance of a lady as a referee would create "a dangerous precedent," and resolved to return the application form and fee. It was further agreed that no application from any lady be entertained. See report in original format. |
