SENIOR CUP
OLD KINGSTONIANS v. WALTHAMSTOW GRANGE
Having
drawn byes in the two preceding rounds. the Old Kingstonians made thier
first appearance in this season's London Senior Cup competition on Saturday.
It was also their last appearance. They were at home to Walthamstow Grange,
who were undoubtedly superior to a team which has been considerably weakened
by the enlistment of some of its best players in the fighting forces of
this country. In the first half the visitors had as much as three-quarters
of the play in their hands, although they were only leading by 2-1 at
the interval. The O.K. forwards made strenuous efforts to get the better
of their opponents in the second half, and Thayers, who scored their only
goal in the first half, equalised soon after the re-start, but Walthamstow
scored once more, and ran out winners by three goals to one.
The weakness of the O.K.'s defence, more especially in the half-back line,
was apparent almost from the start. This does not apply to Bowry in goal,
who ably dealt with the shots which came his way during the rather long
pressure to which his post was subjected. Eventually, however, he was
taken somewhat by surprise, and slipped as he endeavoured to reach the
ball as it came whizzing from Cater, and entered the net. He succeeded
in keeping out a very fine centre from Ayres before he yielded a second
goal, while hard pressed, to Fielder, the latter neatly toeing the ball
into the net as a colleague headed it to him. Immediately afterwards there
was a brilliant dash on the O.K.'s right wing, and Thayers made a splendid
shot, the ball striking the net just beneath the bar, and bouncing out
again. It was clearly a goal, and the referee gave it as such after consulting
both linesman.
The second half opened in lively fashion, a spirited attack being made
by the O.K. forwards, and ending in Thayers scoring a very smart goal,
as the result of following up, thus equalising. They continued to press
for a time, but were unable to obtain any further success. When at last
the Walthamstow forwards broke away, Ayres put his side ahead again with
a shot which Bowry just failed to keep out. It was thought that the O.K.'s
had equalised once more when Chalk headed in from a first-rate centre
from Mansey, the referee holding, however, there was an infringement of
the off-side rule. The O.K.'s therefore remained defeated by a majority
of one goal.

Report from Surrey
Advertiser dated 18th Nov 1914- see
report in original format.
With their team of
last season, the O.K.'s would have emerged victorious from their London
Senior Cup contest with Walthamstow Grange. But, to their credit be it
said, several of their best players have responded to the country's call,
captain and vice-captain included, and the result has been a considerable
weakening. This showed itself on Saturday particularly in the half-back
line, which included a newcomer in Newman (no pun intended). He could
not be regarded as a success, while the trio as a whole distinctly failed
to hold the smart Walthamstow forwards.
The visitors were on the other hand a well-balanced team, and the O.K.
forwards had to contend with a very effective defence whenever they made
tracks for goal. In this respect Walthamstow showed marked superiority.
But for half-back inefficiency and lack of support for a pretty good set
of forwards, the O.K.'s would have kept level with their opponents. Thayers
gave a very smart display, and scored both of the O.K's goals.
"Bert" Daniells, the well-known Surrey forward and crack-shot,
who was elected captain of the Old Kingstonians F.C. for this season,
was a spectator at the match. He looked very smart in the uniform of the
Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.
