ATHLETICS.
Kingston F.C. Festival: Success for Back-markers. Prizes Distributed by Mrs. Cave. The disquieting effects of the day did much to reduce the chance of the third annual athletic assembly organised by the Kingston-on-Thames Football and Athletic Club being a success, but the executive worked the harder because the circumstances were discouraging, and the result was as satisfactory as could be expected. The attendance, in happier times, might have been trebled, although the ground at Ham boundary, again placed at the disposal of the promoting club by the Kingston Gas Company C.C. is somewhat remote. The weather was all that could be desired, and although entries were somewhat meagre the racing was of an interesting nature, a special feature being the success of the back-markers, who practically swept the board. H. Hayes won the 100 yards (open) from virtual scratch, winning his heat and the final in fine style; and in the 100 yards for footballers he was at absolute scratch winning after a strong effort. The Quarter miles was also won by the virtual scratch man, H. Kidd, and the mile proved to be a gift for J. Wilson than whom only two other competitors has less start. These were the four open events. There was only one other running contest for adults, the members' 100. and this was won from scratch by W. H. Child who was second in the open 100 with 9 3/4 yards. Contest of a fancy nature, with 100 yard handicaps for girls and boys, completed the programme, in the conduct of which the following were concerned:- Referee: Mr. A.B. George (Athletes' advisory club), starters, Messrs. E. F. Vowles (hon. secretary Surrey A.C.) and E. Cope; judges, Messrs. J.W. Whitecross, E. F. Vowles, A H. Marriott, W.H.O. Steer, F.W. Knight, W. H. Child, W.F.S. Saunders, E. Nicholls, A. Bowry, T.Wright and C. Clarke. The stewards were Messrs. S. Chandler, C. Tickner, F. Ley, W. King, W. Haggis, F.Brown, F, Forder and H. Grainger and M. Mckenzie, with Messrs. A. E. Hatcher and F. V. Farring as marksmen. Mesrs. F. W. Pavey, C.G. Hill, F. Barnes, C. Skinner. W. Cooper, A. Webb, W. H. Child, W. E. S. Saunders, A. Bowry, F.Brown, E. Forder and H. Lynn constituted the committee, and Messrs. F.G. Readwin and A. North discharged the secretarial duties with much energy. Mr. W. Read was hon. treasurer. Two lady members of the St. John's ambulance Society (Richmond 26th Div.) were in attendance. It was feared that the circumstances would prevent Mrs. Cave attending, to distribute the prizes, but what would have been an additional misfortune was happily averted by Mrs. Cave's kindness and greatly appreciated. She was introduced by Mr. A. North, the football club's hon. secretary, and accepted from Mr. Pavey, with whom was little Master Alec North, a choice bouquet. At the occasion of the ceremony Mr. A.B. George thanked Mrs. Cave for her attendance and, referring to the general proceedings, said it had grabbed him as an old athlete, to note how the Kingston club made provision for the younger generation in the compilation of the programme. During the afternoon the Sunbury prize band played selections of music, and their services were retained for the dance programme after nightfall. Some of the artists of a country fair were also provided. LOCAL EVENTS. 100 yards handicap members of Kingston-on-Thames F.C. :- 1. W.H. Child, scratch, 2. W.E. Stone Saunders, 4 yards, 3.
