Report on death of Jack Cullen from Surrey Comet dated 25th March 2018.

Pte. Arthur J. Cullen.
Pte. Arthur John Cullen, 4th Worcester Regiment, youngest son of Mr. Cullen,Gigg's Hill, who was reported missing since April, 23, 1917, has now been presumed killed on that date. The deceased's regiment, in which he had been for about a year, was in heavy fighting on the Arras front during the period named. They reached their objective, but then had to retire owing to a counter attack by the enemy, when one company of the battalion was cut off. There were many casualties and many others were taken prisoners, though the Germans were subsequently driven out.

Jack Cullen's name will always be remembered in local sporting circles, for his association with Gigg's Hill Football Club. He was one of its founders in 1895, and played in goal during the 14 years of its existence, being captain of the first team for six seasons. Undoubtedly it was his ability as a "goalie" that kept the club so prominent in the Kingston and District League competition. He was several times chosen for Inter-League games. Later he became a member of the Kingston-on-Thames F.C. and Ditton St. Mary's F.C. He was quite a useful cricketer, and often proved his worth on the historic green at Gigg's Hill. He will be well remembered as scorer for Thames Ditton C.C. which position he held up till the outbreak of war. Pte. Cullen, whose age was 37, was married and leaves two children.
