FOOTBALLER'S D.C.M. Sergeant Thomas White, 106 Machine Gun Co., only son
of Mr. and Mrs. White, Glenarlie, Gloucester-road, Kingston Hill, has been
awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous bravery on the Western
Front. The act which gained Sergeant White his honour was as follows: At
Maurepas, in August, 1916, when all his officers were casualties, he took
charge of the gun team and re-organising them led them forward, placing
them in a commanding position, and by his machine gun fire repulsed a dangerous
enemy counter-attack. He also showed great courage and control when the
enemy was within 80 yards of his gun. On a previous occasion he also distinguished
himself with coolness and command under heavy shell fire. Sergt. White will be remembered by many Kingstonians as a good all-round athlete, having won gold and silver medals for Marathon racing. He played football for Kingston Minerva, St. Luke's Old Boys, and Kingston A team, and was captain of the Weston Green F.C. Prior to emslisting into the Highland Light Infantry he was a member of the local Territorial Battalion, and was employed at Kelly's Mills, Kingston. He proceeded to the Western Front with his unit and took part in all the engagements from Mons. While with the Highland L.I. he was thrice mentioned in despatches at St. Julien in October, 1914, Richbourg in May, 1915, and Givenchy in August, 1915. In February, 1915, he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and 'he'd the rank of Coy.-Sergt.-Major.
