Report on the death of Fred Adams from Surrey Comet dated 15th May 1915.

A MONS HERO'S DEATH.
Touching tribute from a comrade.
How the Germans tried and failed to shift the "Old Surreys."

In last Saturday's issue we announced the fact that Corporal Fred Adams, of the 1st Batallion East Surrey Regt., was killed in action on April 20th. His rank was erroneously given as private, but we now learn that he had been promoted to Corporal while serving in France. He was the son of Mrs. Adams, Lock-cottages, New-road, Ham, and was only 23 yeaars of age.
Corporal Adams crossed to France with the Expenditionary Force, and had been in most of the fighting since the memorable withdrawal from Mons onward. He was an old scholar of Ham Church of England Schools, and for several years was a member of Ham and Petersham Church Lads' Brigade. He enlisted into the 1st East Surreys in 1909 and served with his batallion in Ireland. He was a very promising football player, and had won several medals while playing for his batallion. When home on furlough he frequently assisted Ham and Petersham F.C., as well as the O.K. Reserves. As a lad he was much respected by all who knew him.
