GUILDFORD
WEDNESDAY v. KINGSTON LEAGUE.
On Wednesday these teams met in a 'friendly' on the Sports Ground, Guildford,
and a very one-sided game resulted in a defeat for Kingston by seven goals
to two.
From the start the homesters pressed strongly, and the ball was placed
behind twice in quick succession. A corner, which proved fruitless, next
fell to them and in turn an unproductive corner for Kingston was conceded
by Gwinn. A shot from Devonshire was saved by Hynes at the expense of
a corner, which also proved fruitless. Welch did some good work and was
responsible for several good forward passes. After a determined attack
by Guildford, Emery got the ball and neatly outwitted Hynes.
A minute later, after some extremely pretty play by the Guildford forwards,
Farnfield got the ball, and added a second point. Guildford re-commenced
bravely, but were pulled up for off-side. Play was for a short time in
favour of the homesters, and then Kingston forced another corner, but
from the kick the ball went behind. From the goal kick the Guildfordians
got possession, and a third point was added by Farnfield.
No further scoring took place in the first half, but Guildford showed
themselves to be much the superior of their opponents, and had all the
play. The work of the forwards was very noticeable.
Re-starting, play was at first a little more equal. Emery was responsible
for an excellent attempt, after a good run, the ball rebounding into play
from the cross-bar. Farnfield, after a good run, passed to Stansfield,
who put in a capital shot, which was nicely saved by Hynes. Returning
to the charge, Farnfield notched a fourth goal for his side, and then
a fifth point was added by Stansfield, after an exciting bit of play in
the mouth of the Kingston goal.
Shortly afterwards the ball rebounded into play from the cross-bar, from
a shot by Farnfield, and was neatly headed in by Stanfield, thus scoring
Guildford's sixth goal. The Kingston men appeared to wake up, and after
a good combined run Stedman put the leather into the home net for the
first, time.
Kingston continued to press. A good opportunity was missed by Stag through
weak kicking, and a moment later Thomson had to save a good shot, from
Fagan. However, Stedman again got possession, and once more outwitted
Thompson. Later in the game a capital effort by Devonshire was neatly
converted into a goal by Stansfield, and the game ended as stated, Guildford
seven, Kingston two.
