Report on Annual General Meeting of Kingston-on-Thames held on 1st June 1898 from Surrey Comet dated 4 June 1898.

KINGSTON-ON-THAMES FOOTBALL CLUB.
The annual general meeting of the members of this Association club was held on Wednesday evening at the headquarters, the Cricketers' Inn, Fairfield. In the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr. R. N. Ferguson, who wrote regretting his inability to be present, Mr. W. Hurliman occupied the chair. Letters were also read from Messrs. D. Judd, W. G. Carn and J. P. Asher, all of whom were prevented from being present. Those present included Messrs. H. Short, W. Hall, F. B. Cunliffe, L. Ware, J. Brown, W. Ocock, S. Vincent, E. Andrews, G. J. Tully, E. T. Wilkinson, W. Mawson, H. Hutchison, A. McDonald, Fish, E. A. Doo, Tinniswood, W. Hunt, H. Offer, Perry, Foster, A. Douglas (honorary secretary), etc.

The committee's report for the past year was read, and in it they desired particularly to point out the continued excellent financial state of the club, which undoubtedly showed its increasing popularity. The club was more fortunate last season in having most of their cup ties drawn at home, hence a welcome increase in their funds from gate receipts. The committee tendered their heartiest thanks to the authorities at Kingston Barracks and to the Kingston Rugby F.C. for their kindness in allowing the use of their grounds on the several occasions.

They had a balance in hand of £9 18s. 14d. Their team reached the semi-final in the Surrey Junior Cup competition, and were only defeated after a drawn game by Camberley St. Michael's, the ultimate winners of the cup. In the Kingston and District League they were placed second, thus relinquishing the "Hunt" Cup. The report went on to state that in this competition the committee felt that they had received most unfair treatment by the League Council, which forced upon them the unpleasant task of appealing to the Surrey County Association, who ordered their re-play with Walton St. Mary's, and it was entirely due to the unsportsmanlike conduct of this club that Kingston were not again the holders of the cup.

Their second team occupied the unenviable position of wooden-spoonists in Division II., but this was not to be wondered at when the usual difficulties which all reserve teams are subject to are taken into consideration. In conclusion the committee deplored their unsuccessful endeavours to obtain a private ground, as they felt sure that if this object was once obtained the standard of the club would rise, and they would bring honours to their most ancient and royal borough.

The records of the matches played are- First XI. (all matches), played 22, won 15, lost 6, drawn 1; cup matches, played 6, won 4, lost 1, drawn 1; League matches, played 11, won 9, lost 2.Second XI., played 19, won 3, lost 14, drawn 2. The balance sheet showed the receipts to have been £40 5s. 5d., and the expenditure £30 7s. 31/2d., thus leaving, a balance of £9 18s. 1d., which with assets was increased to £14 Os. 11d. On the motion of Mr. Cunliffe, seconded by Mr. Wilkinson, the report and balance sheet were unanimously adapted.

The following officers were then elected for the ensuing year:- President, Mr. R. N. Ferguson; the name of Mr. A. Eager, a member of the Council of Division 4 of the L.F.A., was added to the list
of vice-presidents; captain, Mr. F. B. Cunliffe; vice-captain, Mr. E. H. Foster; captain A team, Mr. H. Hutchison; vice-captain, Mr. A. McDonald; auditors, Messrs. C. S. Lamb and J. H. Johnson; treasurer, Mr. W. Hunt; committee, Messrs. W. Hall, H. Offer, J. Kemp, W. Ocock, H. Short, Perry, Fish, Hurlimann and Tully. On Mr. Douglas being nominated for the post of honorary secretary he declined to again accept that office, as he had not time to properly perform the duties, but on Mr. Hurlimann undertaking to assist him with the work, Mr. Douglas consented to stand, and was unanimously re-elected. Messrs. E. T. Wilkinson and P. H. Godfrey were elected joint secretaries for the A team.

Hearty votes of thanks wore accorded to all the retiring officers. Some discussion then took place on the question of entering teams for the various league and cup competitions, but eventually the meeting was adjourned until June 15th for a further consideration of the matter.
