Reports on Smoking Concert with presentation of medals for the Kingston and District League held on 4th May 1898 from Surrey Comet dated 7 May 1898.

KINGSTON AND DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE.
PRESENTATION OF CUPS AND MEDALS.

The final stage of the season's programme of the Kingston and District Football League was reached on Wednesday evening, when a smoking concert was held at the Kingston Hotel, at which the trophies won during the season were handed over to the winners. Mr. A. W. Homersham, J.P., was announced to preside, but a letter from him explained that he was unable to do so, as his medical adviser declined to allow him out at night. The vacancy thus caused was ably filled by Mr. Percy Brandon, of Barnes, a member of the Surrey County F.A. Council, and he was supported by Councillors Glover, Minnitt and Cooper, Messrs. W. G. Carn (chairman K. and D. L.), Rowland. Moores (vice-chairman K. and D. L.), L. A. Ormiston and V. G. Smith (East Sheen), etc., and there was a fairly good attendance.

The proceedings commenced an hour after the time announced by Mr. H. Ambrose playing a pianoforte solo, and he subsequently accompanied the vocalists. Mr. W. R. Nightingale gained rounds of applause and an encore for "The songs I left behind me," and replied with "It was beautiful." Mr. G. Johnson effectively rendered "The old toll gate"; Mr. C. E. Aston sang "Don't it tantalise you"; Mr. Gus Wincote (Wandsworth F.C.) "My old Dutch"; Mr. Fred James (Wandsworth F.C:), "Take me there"; and Mr. A. Cook "Alone on the raft.'

Mr. Nevill, a very clever equilibrist, entertained the company by some marvellous feats; Mr. E. Aston recited in his usual stirring manner "Rorke's Drift"; Mr. W. Millis gave a well-executed banjo solo; and Mr. S. Bryant's pantomime in ten minutes was highly amusing and cleverly done.

During an interval Mr. Carn made a few remarks, in the course of which he said that owing to lack of funds last season they were unable to present the medals to Walton St. Mary's, the winners of the second division cup, but he was pleased to say that they were now able to do so, so that whatever may happen to the clubs the League were able to keep their promises. They had not yet been able to procure a cup for Division III., but it was quite probable that their first division clubs would not be competing in that league next season, but would go in for the newly formed Surrey Junior League, so that the "Hunt" Cup would then go to the Wednesday division.

At present, although the legal holder of the cup, he had been unable to obtain possession of it, so that it could not be presented to the winners that night, but he hoped it would be handed over to them later on. Of course there was a little soreness in the Kingston club at being ousted from the tournament, but he was sure the majority of Kingston men were good sportsmen and were pleased to see the Brentford club add this trophy to the others won by them in the Middlesex competitions.

The chairman said he was glad to see that the funds of the League had so much increased that they were able to give their last year's medals. He was also pleased to say that the newly-formed Surrey Junior League was gaining more support than the promoters ever anticipated.

The chairman then distributed the medals. Mr. Ross, the secretary of Walton St. Mary's, received those won by his club in the season 1896-1897. Brentford (A) winners of the first division this season were S. Symes, Leotaud, J. Pickett, James, A. Butcher, G. Haslin, H. Saunders, F. Quinton, Johnson, Ryall and J. Chambers; Middle Mill (winners of cup and medals for second division), Bixley, Humphrey, Castledine, Sherar, LeGrys. Williams, Berry, Crowter, Woodward, Faulkner and Wade. Kingston Wednesday, (winners of the third division), A. Hynes, W. Allaker, H. Daws, F. Caiger, W. Mackenzie, G . Woods, C. Boord, S. Vincent, E. Andrews, H. Baker and L. Hearsum.

Mr. Carn mentioned that it had been intended to present caps to S. Harris (Surbiton Rangers) and D. Halliday (Hampton Hill), who had turned up in four out of the five inter-league matches, but although they had been faithfully promised they should be there that night, the caps had not arrived, but they should he forwarded on to those players as soon as received. The record of the league in inter-league matches was 5 played, 3 won, 1 lost and 1 drawn; goals for 12, against 10. A hearty vote thanks was accorded to Mr. Brandon for presiding.

A smoking concert to present the trophies won during the season in connection with the Kingston and District Football League was held at the Kingston Hotel on Wednesday evening. In the first division Brentford (A) team, who, with their supporters were present in large numbers, were returned the winners and although they were awarded the medals, they were unable to carry back the chief trophy, the "Hunt" cup, as it was not forthcoming, owing to Mr. Hunt declining to hand it over to Mr. Carn, the chairman of the League, but for what reason did not transpire. The second division cup and medals were taken by Middle Mill (Kingston); and the medals for the Wednesday division by the Kingston Wednesday club; while Walton St. Mary's were given their medals for having won the second division cup last season.
