Report on Charity fun match played 19 April 1897 from Surrey Comet dated 24 April 1897.

TOP HATS v. BONNETS.-
The Easter Monday comic football carnival was held for the second time on the Fairfield, Kingston, and the morning being fine, attracted some 5,000 or 6,000 persons to witness the fun. About 9.15 a.m. a procession was organised at the Cricketers, and this, headed by the band of the St. Alban's (Teddington) Boys' Brigade, paraded some of the principal streets of the town. On returning shortly before 11, Mr. Fred Smith photographed the group, and they then proceeded to the playing arena, which by this time was lined several deep.

Mr. Councillor Glover, who has taken a great deal of interest in the Association game this season, set the ball in motion, and the fun at once commenced. The antics of the various players in their burlesque attire caused roars of laughter, but at times their ability in the game came out prominently.

The rules were, of course, entirely ignored, such little infringements as the guardians of the line running out and having a kick, the goalkeeper carrying the ball from one side of the ground to the other, being passed over by the personage acting in the capacity of referee.

The Hats were the first to score, and in rather quick succession added another goal. To avenge these reverses the ladies (?) went at it hammer and tongs, and aided by some curious decisions, managed to draw level at half-time- at least so it was stated. During an interval the Banker's Brothers troupe gave a burlesque on football which was highly amusing.

On resuming the game, the fun increased, and each side in turn scored, it being reported at the close that the game had ended in a draw of five goals each. At the close of the game a verse of the National Anthem was sung by the players assembled in the centre of the ground.

The whole proceedings were of an orderly nature, and there being a band of persevering collectors on the ground, the goodly sum of £13 3s. 7 1/2d. was collected, so that after expenses are deducted, it is expected that £10 10s. will be handed over to charities. A very large amount of the work of organisation fell upon Messrs. H. Short and A. Shaw, who acted as honorary secretaries, and to them, as well as to the other able assistants, the success of the affair is due.
