KINGSTON-ON-THAMES
V. WALLINGTON-
This tie in the third round of the Surrey Junior
Cup competition was decided at Wallington on Saturday, when Kingston gained
the victory by two goals to none. The Kingston players, with a large number
of friends, made the journey by road in breaks. Owing to a late start,
two "35's" were played, and at 3 5, Kingston having won the
toss, Leadham kicked off for the homesters.
Hurliman secured and passed to Baker, who made a good run, but was robbed
by Craig. Fagan returned and "King's" pressed severely, but
owing to the slippery nature of the ground, could not score, the ball
being sent behind by Vincent. From the goal kick, "Wallington"
tried to get away but Lockett, stopped the rush and gave to Short, who
shot, but Kelly fisted out. Baker secured about five yards out and gave
the goalie no earthly chance, putting in a grounder that sent the ball
through the net.
On the restart, Kingston again pressed, and keeping up the attack scored
once more by Vincent, amidst cheers from the Kingston supporters. Starting
off again Wallington got away, but A. R. Short cleared in cleaver style,
and "King's" again pressed. Baker got on, and when close in
goal was badly fouled by Shaw and Atkinson. These players were warned
by the referee, and a penalty was given. A. R. Short took the kick and
just missed by inches, the wind lifting the ball over.
Shortly after the restart, Vincent received a severe kick behind the left
ear. Kingston, however, kept up the pressure, but the ground being so
slippery, the forwards could not judge their shots, and half-time arrived
with the visitors bombarding the home goal, the score being: Kingston-on-Thames
two goals, Wallington nil.
On the restart Wallington went away with a rush, but found Peck and Short
at home, this pair playing a grand game, clearing with head and feet in
splendid style time after time. The homesters, however, could not keep
up the attack, and Ocock and Vincent got away, and gave Craig and Shaw
a lot of trouble. Craig got on and sent in a long shot, which Lanham easily
cleared. Immediately after Lanham again cleared from the same player.
Kemp now had a clear run, but waited too long before centreing, the ball
ultimately going behind. The same player had an easy chance shortly after,
but did not avail himself of it. Kingston from now to the finish had it
all their own way, but could not increase their lead, and the whistle
sounding for time, left them victors, the score sill remaining: Kingston-on-Thames
two goals, Wallington nil.
Sides:-
Wallington: R. Kelly, goal; Craig and Shaw, backs; Pailthorpe, Valentine
and Atkinson, half-backs; Harris, Leadham, C. Leadham, F. Webb, and C.
Tanner, forwards.
Kingston: F. Lanham, goal; A. R Short and A. Peck, backs; F. R. Lockett,
J. Fagan and W. Hurliman, half-backs; J. Kemp, H. Short, J. Baker, Vincent
and W. Ocock, forwards.
After the match the Kingston team and supporters to the number of 28,
sat down to a meat tea, and after ample justice had been done to the good
things provided, a start was made for home, which was reached shortly
after seven o'clock. The team drove through the town, the canvas screen
on the front break displaying in large letters the fact that "Kingston
beat Wallington," an announcement which brought forth cheers en route.

KINGSTON-ON-THAMES v. WALLINGTON
Played at Wallington, on Saturday, when Kingston won by two goals to nil.
The Kingston team turned out punctually on time, but Wallington, not being
ready, the game was not started until 3 o'clock, with the home team one
man short.
Kingston
won the toss, and elected to play downhill, with the wind in their favour.
Wallington kicked off, one man short, but soon found a substitute. Kingston
soon began to press, and, after a good pass by H. Short, from the left,
Vincent scored with a good grounder. H. Short then put in a good shot,
which the home custodian cleared, only to be returned to the net by Baker.
During
the second half Kingston did most of the pressing, but Wallington, on
several occasions, made desperate efforts to score. The defence, however,
was too good for them, and, no other point being scored, Kingston won
by two goals to nil. The ground was in bad condition through the rain.
Kingston team.- F. Lanham, goal; A. Peck and A.R. Short, backs; W. Hurliman,
J. Fagan, and R.F. Lockett, half-backs; W. Ocock, S. Vincent, J. Baker,
H. Short, and J. Kemp, forwards.
Referee.- Mr. Ailles.
Report
from Surrey Advertiser dated 16 December 1896- see

The Kingston-on-Thames Association team entered the anti-penultimate
round of the Surrey County Junior Cup competition on Saturday, when they
went to Wallington and defeated the club of that place by two goals to
none. Immediately after the match, Wallington entered a protest against
Kingston, the grounds being that the team, as a whole, was a senior one,
and that Peck and Hurlimann, in particular, were seniors.
