KINGSTON-ON-THAMES
v. GUY'S HOSPITAL (SURREY SENIOR CUP TIE).-
A considerable number of spectators witnessed this match on the Fairfield,
Kingston, on Saturday.
From the kick off Guy's immediately pressed, but although the Kingston
defence was equal to the occasion their forwards rarely got away with
the ball and the attack was kept up. After half an hour's play Baldwin
in attempting to clear a long shot was charged and the ball went into
the net.
Soon after Ford scored by a long swift shot which Baldwin played at too
late. The Kingstonians for the next ten minutes did most of the pressing.
Peck got clean away but was overtaken by Longhurst and after one or two
throws in near the corner Pyke secured and notched a point for the home
team. For the remainder of this half Kingston did most of the pressing,
but the score at half time was Guy's 3, Kingston 1.
On restarting the home forwards showed more life, and although never playing
a passing game they kept matters pretty even right up to the finish. At
length from a combined run, aided by a miskick on Morfett's part, Guy's
notched another goal with a fast shot that could not have been saved,
and keeping the pressure up for the last ten minutes, won comfortably
as stated.

FOOTBALL. SURREY SENIOR CUP. FIRST ROUND.
GUY'S HOSPITAL v. KINGSTON.
A stranger visiting the Fairfield, at Kingston, on Saturday. would hardly
have realised that the match being played there, between Guy's Hospital
and Kingston was a tie in the first round for the Surrey Senior Cap. There
was little or no enthusiasm displayed. The number of spectators did not
exceed 300, and the game, from a spectator's point of view, was of a most
uninteresting character. Guy's Hospital brought a fairly strong team,
but were minus the services of FitzHughes, A. E. Crossby, A. B. Carter,
F. G. Lidderdale and W. R. Davies. The ground was in capital condition,
and the weather was favourable.
The match was started some 15 minutes after three o'clock. For the greater
portion of the first half play centred in Kingston's quarters, and, undoubtedly,
Guy's Hospital had much the best of the game. The shooting of their forwards,
however, was very faulty, and more than once they failed to score when
they might easily have done so. Kingston were altogether lacking in combination,
and this was probably owing to the frequent shifting of places by members
of their team.
About a quarter to four o'clock Guy's Hospital were awarded their first
point, owing to the Kingston goalkeeper accidentally sending the ball
through his own net. There had been little to call forth remarks up to
this time. Shortly afterwards Ford sent the ball through for a second
time for Guy's Hospital. The Kingston men then appeared to play up with
more determination, and before the whistle blew Peck had scored the first
point on their behalf. The teams crossed over, Guy's Hospital leading
by two goals to one.
In the second half Kingston undoubtedly showed better form, but at times
their play was far from being praiseworthy. Guy's Hospital continued to
press, and from a pretty pass from Pearson, Humphreys secured another
goal. This was the last point secured, Guy's Hospital thus proving the
winners by three goals to one. Teams:-
Kingston.- A Baldwin, goal; W. Morffitt and W. Collinson, backs; A. Mann,
J. Fagan and J. Davies, halfbacks; W. Ocock and P. G. Lloyd, right wing;
A. Peck and J. Kemp, left wing; H. J. K. Kaines, centre.
GUY'S HOSPITAL.- M. H. Barker, goal; G. Longhurst and G. Marshall, backs;
R. Hall, F. E. Walker and H. A. Higgins, halfbacks; P. S. Mandy and W.
G. Palmer, right wing; W. Pearson and L. Humphreys, left wing; G. Ford,
centre.
Referee: Mr W. J. Wilson (Referees' Association). Linesmen Messrs H. Bernard-Onrael
(Guy's) and W. G. Carn (Kingston).

SURREY SENIOR CHALLENGE

Guy's HOSPITAL v. KINGSTON-ON-THAMES.-
There was a large Attendance at Kingston on Saturday. The visitors were
without several of their best men, but managed to qualify for the next
round by defeating the local team by three goals to one.
Baldwin put the ball through his own goal, and a few minutes later Ford
scored a second. Kingston then played up better and just before half time
notched a point through Peck. In the second stage the visitors had much
the best of the play, but owing to their poor display in front of goal
could only add one other goal.

Report
from Middlesex & Surrey Express dated 16 November 1895- see
report in original format.
Note there is a variation between papers as to one
of the players and the goalscorer and while other papers agree, I have
assumed the Surrey Comet is more likely to be accurate and it is possible
the other reports came from the same source.
