KINGSTON-ON-THAMES
v. CLAPHAM ROVERS.-
One of the best games seen on the Fairfield for some time, took place
on Saturday, when the Kingstonians met this well known combination of
old public school players. The visitors brought down a good team, including
H. K. Foster, Bristowe and Newbronner, while the home eleven was at full
strength, with the exception of Kemp, who is still suffering from the
accident met with against Hampton Hill, the inclusion of Davis, at half-back,
greatly strengthened the team.
Play for the first twenty minutes ruled even, Peck making some good runs
and centres, but owing to lack of coolness near goal, the inside men failed
to take advantage of his efforts. The Rovers responded with several long
shots, but did not give Baldwin much anxiety. Free kicks against both
sides for "foul throws" were rather numerous, players having
apparently not mastered the new ruling, which requires both feet to be
touching the line when throwing in.
Eventually after some good play by Fagan and Peck, Kaines secured the
ball and with a neat shot scored for Kingston. Encouraged by this the
dark blues played up vigorously and from a pass by Peck, Ocock had the
goal at his mercy but missed his kick altogether, and half-time found
the score as started.
From the re-start, the Rovers took the ball right down and Browne scored
with a lightning shot, and as the Kingstonians were severely pressed for
some time, hereabouts it looked as if the Rovers were going to run away
from them. A sharp shot at close quarters was kicked away by Baldwin,
and another dangerous attack was ended by a player getting offside. The
free kick brought relief to Kingston, as after Ocock and Kaines had made
some speedy runs, Peck secured the ball close in and gave his side the
lead.
The game was now very fast, but the visitors relied too much on individual
effort. Ocock was putting in characteristic runs, and from a pass to Pyke,
who sent on to Kaines, that player landed No. 3. The home team had now
got the measure of the opposing backs, and Fagan, Peck and Davis caused
a lot of trouble. Two or three corner kicks were taken, and Collinson
put on some long shots, which, only missed by inches, but it remained
for Ocock to put on the fourth point after the ball had been sent over
from the left wing, and Kingston won a good game by four goals to one.
The victory was thoroughly well deserved, and the club's supporters are
now looking forward to the all important tussle with Guy's Hospital next
week, when the Kingstonians should at any rate make a good fight of it.
The forwards possess plenty of pace, but need more accuracy in passing,
and steadiness in front of goal, the halves all tackled well, but are
apt to hamper their own backs and kick too hard. Morfett and Collinson
are very safe at back. Kemp, the club's captain, hopes to take the field
against Guy's, which should further strengthen the team.

KINGSTON-ON-THAMES v. CLAPHAM ROVERS.-
Played at Kingston on Saturday. During the first half Kaines scored for
Kingston. On re-starting, Brown equalised with a fast shot, but Kingston
then played up strongly, and scoring by Peck, Kaines, and Ocock won comfortably
by four goals to one.

Last Saturday the
once famous Clapham Rovers paid a visit to Kingston, and at the conclusion
of the match victory rested with Kingston by four goals to one. It was
a downright good win and greatly pleased Kingstonians in view of to-day's
Cup-tie. The visitors, by the way, filled a vacancy caused by the scratching
of the Scottish Fossils.

Note- Davies was listed as A. Davis in the report-
however in the expected line up he was listed as Davies and the following
week's expected line up he was listed as J. Davies as well as appearing
in some reports for the following game as J. Davies (although the Surrey
Comet suggests Pyke was playing and have used this for the "official"
records).
