KINGSTON-ON-THAMES
v. SCOTTISH FOSSILS (A)-
This match which is always looked forward to by the Kingstonians with
pleasurable interest, came off on Saturday on the Fairfield, Kingston,
and resulted in an easy win for the home team, who put on seven goals
to love. The Kingstonians were able to put nearly their full strength
into the field, Short being the only notable absentee. Goodwin went forward
vice Fagan, who played half, and this change was of great benefit to the
team, both these players putting in good work in their new places.
The visitors had the advantage of a stiff breeze in the first half and
though the game was fairly even the Kingstonians had the advantage, Lanham
only being called on once. The home backs were baffled by the wind, but
the visitors were weak in front of goal, and did not meet with success,
while on the other hand Gains scored a pretty goal from a pass by Ocock-
a previous point by the same player having been disallowed, as the ball
had gone out of play before being centred. Half time scored 1-0 in favour
of Kingston.
On restarting the homesters put on a rare spurt, and Goodwin headed in
No. 2 from a pass by Kemp. Gains eluded the backs and put on No. 3, and
the fourth, fifth and sixth goals came in quick succession, Peck putting
in a pretty one from half back. It now seemed only a matter of how many
goals Kingston would score, but the "canny ones" pulled themselves
together, and an ugly rush to the other end was only just neutralised
by Lanham, who threw a sharp shot away with his usual sangfroid.
For the last quarter of an hour the homesters could make no impression
on the Scotch defence; but close on time Gains - who was certainly "having
a day out" - scored a seventh goal for his side.
The game was not nearly so one-sided as the score would indicate, the
Scots keeping the opposing backs very busy, and only failing when in front
of goal; whereas, mirabile dictu, the Kingston forwards were always particularly
dangerous when within the 12 yard line. The absence of two players militated
against the visitors' combination, but one of their substitutes played
a very good game for them. The whole of the home side played well except
Lloyd, who was decidedly off colour, and Ware, who is too selfish, and
who shirks his work. Perhaps the feature of the play was the forward play
of Goodwin, whose generalship is admirable.

KINGSTON-ON-THAMES v. SCOTTISH FOSSILS.-
This return fixture was played on the Fairfield on Saturday. Kingston
played against a very high wind in the first half but Gaines shot a goal.
With the wind, however, the Kingston forwards gave a very fine display
and put on six goals, thus winning the match by seven goals to nil.
