KINGSTON
WANDERERS 2ND V. OLD CENTRALS (a).-
Played at Wimbledon, on Saturday, and after a well contested came the
Wanderers won by one goal (Skeats) to nil.
Report from Surrey Comet dated 13 Dec 1890- see
report in original format.
It seems something so unnatural to have to record the defeat
of the Old Centrals this season, that I have to consider before putting
pen to paper whether or not it can be true. Certain it is, that the victory,
if victory it can be called, secured by Kingston Wanderers last Saturday,
was a flukey concern, and until the question of the disputed goal is settled,
I decline to record the defeat of the home team. In face of their umpire's
decision, who was unable to see, and declared that he could not give any
positive assurance either way, as it was getting dark, the Old Central's
don't feel inclined to acknowledge it themselves, for several of their
members saw the goal scored. In stating the above, I do not for one minute
refuse to accept the superiority of the Kingston Wanderers, nor does the
home team take offence at the awkward position they find themselves in,
but merely declare that actually it was a drawn game, but must be considered
a loss until otherwise determined. This is the fault of both teams having
to depend on one umpire.
Play started at 3.30, and after about 10 minutes the Kingston Wanderers
scored their first goal, which turned out their last goal and last shot,
for the Old Centrals played in such a determined manner that all the efforts
of the visitors to get beyond their back defence, failed. Too much cannot
be said of the backs, who bore the whole brunt of the match, owing to
the very indifferent play of the right wing. The Old Centrals made repeated
shots at their opponents goal, but to no purpose, for the Wanderers' goal
keeper saved splendidly. The ball crossed the line once during the whole
of the second half.
The home team was:- Bond (goal), Milledge and Bird (backs), Jenkins, Rayment
(captain), and Preston (half backs), Gallaway and Smith (right forwards),
Anstee (centre forward), R. Bond and Hossack (left forwards).
The Old Centrals held a meeting to consider the question of the disputed
goal reported above, and other business in connection with the 2nd team,
etc., at the Welcome last night. Particulars next week.
Report from Surrey Independent dated 13 Dec 1890- see
report in original format.
A general meeting was held at the Welcome on Friday, when Mr. George Rayment
was voted into the chair. The main topic of the evening's discussion was
the advisability of forming a reserve team, which, after due consideration,
it was decided should be carried into effect. It was also resolved that,
in face of their umpire's decision, and the team which played that day
having each and all (barring two) seen the goal actually scored, to count
the last match with the Kingston Wanderers a draw.
