KINGSTON
WANDERERS V. STREATHAM (A). -
Last Saturday being St. Valentine's Day, the Wanderers received an "ugly
one," the Streatham club beating them by two goals to nil. This was
the first reverse suffered by the Wanderers this season, and without wishing
to detract from the merit of the Streatham club's victory, it must be
said that the visiting team had the hardest of hard lines.
On starting, Streatham were first to break away, but were shortly driven
back, and the Wanderers took a couple of corners, which were fruitless.
Even play followed, both teams playing well. Then a mistake by the Wanderers'
halves let up the home forwards and the ball was put through.
On change of ends the Wanderers simply penned their opponents for 25 minutes,
their forwards passing well and the defence feeding them continually.
Shot after shot was sent in, Kemp, Nott, Chadwick, and Ocock working like
Trojans, only to be foiled by the fine defence of Sanderson (back) and
the goal keeper.
Then the Streatham men put in a rush, and Peck accidentally kicking towards
his own goal, put Clarke, who had been offside, in a position to beat
Lanham and score the second goal. On re-starting, the Wanderers again
pressed and Chadwick put in a shot which the goal keeper appeared to throw
out after it had crossed the line, but no claim was made. The Visitors
took about eight corner kicks in this half, their opponents not taking
one. Time was called with the result as above stated.
Had the game been played on a good ground the result might have been reversed,
but the Wanderers were thoroughly nonplussed by the hills and valleys
which form the Streatham club's "native heath."
Wanderers' team: F. C. Lanham, goal; W. Hurliman and A. Peck, backs; G.
Whenman, E. E. Sayers, and A. Collins, half-backs; W. Ocock and W. A.
Chadwick (right), C. Collins (centre), G. Nott and J. Kemp (left), forwards.
Umpire, W. G. Carn.

Kingston
Wanderers v. Streatham. -
The Wanderers suffered their first reverse this season at Streatham, on
Saturday last, when they were defeated by two goals to nil. The result
hardly indicates the state of the game as the Wanderers, except as far
as scoring went, had decidedly the best Of the game, and only the fine
defence of the home backs and goal-keeper prevented a heavy score being
rue up against them.
The ground, too, was very much against the Wanderers' team, who are accustomed
to the smooth sward of the Fairfield. The Streatham ground may not be
the worst in the kingdom but it's "awfully near it."
Kingston Wanderers-F. C. Lanham (goal), A. Peck, W. Hurliman, (backs),
G. Whenman, E. E. Sayers, A. Collins (half-backs), W. Ocock, W.A. Chadwick
(right), C. Collins (centre), J. Kemp and G. Nott (left) (forwards). Umpire,
