Cobham Hawks 5-2 Saxons (HT: 4-0)

Ocock, G. Whenman.

SAXONS V. COBHAM HAWKS (A).-
The Saxons put a very moderate team into the field at Cobham on Saturday, and consequently came out badly, the score being five to two against them at the finish. Winning the toss the visitors played against the wind, which proved unfortunate, as the breeze which had been very strong abated considerably at half-time. After the Saxons left had attacked and been repulsed, the Hawks responded and gained a corner. This was well played into goal and blown through by the breeze, just touching the custodian on its passage, That player thinking himself well behind his goal line made no effort to save, and was surprised to have a goal given against him. The Hawks kept up the pressure and Williams scored, an appeal for off-side being disallowed. The high wind made the work very difficult for the Saxons' backs and goal keeper, and after a couple of sharp shots had been kept out, Lushington beat the custodian again. Collins and Kemp made a good effort to change the venue, but Peachy having got possession finished up a capital run with a good shot, and sides were changed with the score- four to nil against the Saxons.

On restarting Ocock scored almost immediately, and had hard lines in not repeating the trick, the ball going over. The visitors pressed strongly, Kemp putting in some good centres, but some time elapsed ere Whenman put on number two. Then the Saxons tired, and Peachy put in some good runs for the locals, who scored again by Sherwood, and won as stated. All the Hawks played well, and the Saxons showed up much better than the score indicates. They were handicapped by being without an umpire, the gentleman who volunteered to that duty having but a limited knowledge of the game. Sides:- Hawks: Denly, goal; Gunning and Kerr, backs; Walker, Smith, and J. Peachey, halfbacks; Steadman, Sherwood, Lushington, Williams and C. B. Peachy, forwards. Saxons: W. G. Carn, goal; J. Bicknell and H. H. Jupp, backs; C. Collins, G. Whenman, and N. J. Ray, half-backs; J. Kemp, C. Lutwyche, G. Ford, W. Ocock, A.Nother, forwards.
