1930-1931 SEASON

This is a (long term) temporary page in order to provide stats and reports for the 1930-1931 season. There are links to a single Surrey Comet report (as a JPG picture) for each game via the match by match stats below. Eventually it is hoped to provide a full season summary and multiple reports for each game with any other news items of interest but this will be some way into the future.

Brief summary of the season:

Kingstonian's second season in the Isthmian League began well and the team had a very settled look to it with a new Centre Forward, Ernie Hannam, becoming a direct replacement for Arthur Durham. His 29 goals were almost on a par with Durham the season before and Macey, McCarthy and Gibson also contributed to a tally of over 100 goals in the season. John Birks filled what had been a missing gap on the left wing and this allowed Ted McCarthy to return to his natural right wing position. Urpeth and Lucas became reliable replacement backs for the Rassell brothers, although George Rassell was to return to the team on many occasions including a spell in the forward line.

Up to just before Christmas they had lost only one game in the league and that was to the eventual champions, Wimbledon, who they also took a point off in the away fixture. However three league defeats over Christmas made any sort of title challenge unlikely, especially given cup games were taking up the majority of their Saturdays. These included a second ever appearance in the F.A. Cup First Round Proper, having played 5 games to get to that stage. It saw K's beaten 3-0 by professional side Tunbridge Wells Rangers and by the vagaries of an "undulating" pitch. They had been comfortably beaten but it was a vast improvement on their only previous appearance in the First Round against professionals when they had lost 9-0.

K's also progressed to the finals of the London Senior Cup and Surrey Senior Cup, winning the Surrey Senior Cup after beating Mitcham Wanderers 2-0 in the final played at Wimbledon. In the London Senior Cup it took three attempts to beat Leyton in the semi final to set up a final against Wimbledon. Played at Crystal Palace they were beaten 1-0 in front of 10,000 spectators with Wimbledon having to play a good proportion of the game with ten men. K's also reached the final of the London Charity Cup, although this was a feat that had only required two matches and the final had to be carried over to the following season because of the fixture congestion. In the Amateur Cup there was a disappointing exit in the second Round when they were beaten 5-1 at Romford.

With 21 cup ties in total and a repeat of their Easter tour of Jersey and Guernsey added to their fixture card it was not a surprise that K's fell badly behind on their league matches. In the second half of April they were playing almost every day of the week and the final two league games, both against Wycombe Wanderers, were played on the same Saturday with a 3pm kick off at Kingston followed by a 6.30pm game at Wycombe. Despite fielding a nearly unchanged team for the two Wycombe games, April had seen K's forced to rotate the team and a number of reserves and even 3rd team players were called upon to help. It was no surprise that league form took a dive, especially given they had prioritised first choice teams for the cup matches. Eventually K's finished in 9th place which was a creditable achievement considering the end of season fixture congestion.

Information is very incomplete for the reserves although K's finished second from bottom in the Isthmian League Reserve section and the 3rd team were on course to finish bottom of the Kingston & District League by some margin.

Fuller details of the Reserves will be added at a later date.
